How Mecuris creates custom orthosis designs in under 30 minutes

The challenge

Mecuris needed a seamless digital solution to design orthoses, ensuring it was intuitive and integrated into the existing workflow for orthopedic technicians.

The outcome

Blending craftsmanship with digital innovation, Mercuris developed three key tools for medical experts to use. The first tool, Mecuris3D Correction, allows for digital joint angle corrections on a patient scan. The second, Mecuris3D Modeling, will enable the professional to modify a positive model in a "plaster like" environment.

In collaboration with trinckle, Mecuris also introduced Mecuris3D Creator, simplifying orthosis design through automation, allowing technicians to customize devices to individual needs without CAD complexities, enhancing care with efficiency.

Challenge faced by Orthopedic technicians

Orthopedic technicians are continually faced with the challenge of delivering personalized care to patients within a tight timeframe amidst complex economic and regulatory landscapes.

The creation of custom-made orthoses is a crucial part of their work, traditionally done manually—a process that is time-consuming from plastering to the manual modeling and production of an orthosis.

Faster and More Effective Work in the Digital Workshop

Digitization of certain work steps in orthopedic technology is only beneficial if it seamlessly integrates with traditional processes. The capability to independently adjust patient data and configure the final product is essential, making a robust, user-friendly software crucial for the industry's digital transition.

Mecuris - Pioneer of the Digitalization of Orthopedic Technology

Mecuris GmbH steps in with its web-based Mecuris Solution Platform (MSP), aiming to streamline the creation of individual orthoses online, translating traditional craftsmanship into digital tools. The platform offers a range of application tools enabling orthopedic technicians to perform all work steps digitally, saving time and resources.

The last step, designing the splint of an orthosis, has been a digital challenge for technicians. High costs come with bringing CAD/CAM software in-house, while outsourcing to service providers leads to loss of control and slower turnaround. The European Medical Device Regulation further complicates contract manufacturing from a regulatory standpoint.

Mecuris, in partnership with trinckle, offers a solution that addresses these issues, providing a user-friendly tool for the independent design of orthotic blanks, making orthosis design simpler and more intuitive for platform users.

"With trinckle, we had a development partner at our side who managed to supplement our own software components with trinckle components in the way we had imagined and specified. The process was always at eye level and a valuable exchange took place."

Mecuris3D Creator: The New Tool for Configuration and Design of Individual Orthoses

With the introduction of Mecuris3D Creator, orthopaedic technicians now have a tool that optimises construction of orthopaedic devices. This tool allows for the customisation of wall thickness, edge progression, setting holes for locking systems, and patterns and contours for ventilation and aesthetics. This level of customisation goes beyond other solutions on the market that only provide slight adaptations of pre-defined of orthopaedic devices. Once the design is complete, the final file can be downloaded and sent for manufacturing, eliminating time-consuming coordination with external service providers.

Time Savings and Increased Efficiency

Integration of Mecuris3D Creator into the workflow significantly reduces the time spent in the physical workshop. Technicians can finalize the print file of the orthosis blank in less than 30 minutes, allowing more time for patient counseling or increasing the number of care items handled. This collaboration with trinckle has not only provided an alternative to manual processes but has also enhanced the digital offerings in the market, making the orthopedic technician's job easier, faster, and more efficient.

Mecuris, collaborating with trinckle, introduced a transformative solution, marking a significant industry leap.

Although as of January 2024, the software is no longer available under the flag of Mecuris, our joint efforts have shown how big a step for an industry Mecuris and trinckle were able to take together.
